Infrared or traditional sauna, a hardware comparison

Walk into a sauna showroom and the salesperson will steer the conversation toward feelings. Steer it back to hardware, because the difference between an infrared cabin and a traditional stone-heater sauna comes down to measurable things: air temperature, how the heat gets made, what your electrical panel can feed, and how many hours of assembly stand between the delivery pallet and your first session. Infrared is the fastest-growing segment of a North America sauna market that generated about $267.8 million in 2025, while traditional saunas remain the largest slice, so both types are selling briskly and both have real strengths. Here is what actually separates them, with numbers.

The temperature gap comes first

Traditional Finnish-style saunas run 150 to 195 F, with 170 to 185 F commonly cited as the sweet spot. Infrared cabins operate far cooler, in the 120 to 140 F band, and manufacturers confirm this on their own spec sheets: Golden Designs lists 118 to 132 F as the ideal range for its Dynamic infrared cabins, with a hard maximum of 140 F.

You sweat either way, but the two experiences are not interchangeable, and buyers who expect Finnish-style intensity from an infrared cabin tend to come away disappointed.

Two completely different heat sources

A traditional sauna is built around an electric stove topped with rocks. Wiring is the hidden line item

This is where budgets blow up without warning. Most traditional electric heaters require a hardwired, dedicated 240V circuit at 30 to 50 amps, which for most homes means an electrician visit and possibly panel work before the sauna heats anything. Price the wiring before you price the wood.

Most 1-2 person infrared cabins, by contrast, run on ordinary 120V household power at 15 to 20 amps. Golden Designs specifies a 120V/15A connection for its cabins and recommends a dedicated outlet, but plug-and-play is the honest description. One rule applies across the board regardless of voltage: every sauna heater should sit on its own dedicated circuit with nothing else sharing the breaker.

Delivery and assembly diverge just as sharply. Cabins and barrels arrive as curbside freight, meaning the driver leaves a pallet at the end of your driveway and the rest is your problem. Golden Designs cabins ship at 300 to 330 pounds; ALEKO’s 4-person barrel weighs 880 pounds, so recruit helpers before the truck arrives. Assembly effort then splits by design: Golden Designs advertises its clasp-together infrared cabins as roughly one hour of work on any indoor surface, carpet included, while ALEKO barrel owners report 10 to 12 hours for two people. One is an afternoon errand, the other is a full weekend project with a friend who now expects beer.

Upkeep after the honeymoon

Traditional heaters carry a consumable that infrared panels do not: the stones. Plan on replacing sauna stones roughly every 1 to 2 years under heavy use, stretching to 3 to 5 years with regular use. Carbon panels have no equivalent replacement schedule.

Wood care is the same for both and refreshingly low-tech. Towels on the benches, a diluted white vinegar solution around 1:4 instead of bleach, and light 120-grit sanding for stubborn stains keep cedar and hemlock interiors presentable. Which one should you buy

Buy traditional if you want serious 170 F-plus heat, steam on demand, and room for more than one person, and you have accepted the electrician bill and the assembly weekend as part of the price. A barrel sauna rewards that commitment for years.

Buy infrared if you want an indoor unit that plugs into the wall, assembles in an hour, and runs mild enough to sit through comfortably at 130 F. It suits smaller spaces, smaller budgets, and anyone whose electrical panel has no spare 240V capacity. If even a cabin footprint is too much, a blanket gets you infrared heat with zero floor space.
